FreeAI Video Upscaler
Upscale video to HD or 4K and turn blurry, low-resolution clips into sharp, detailed MP4s. Supports MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV.
Upscale video with AI in three steps 🚀
- 1. Add your video. Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file on the box above, or click it to pick one from your device.
- 2. Choose 2x or 4x. Pick the size, the quality and the Detail level, then render a one-frame preview to compare before and after.
- 3. Upscale and download. The video is processed frame by frame in your browser and saved as an MP4 you can download.
What is a video upscaler? 🤔
A video upscaler makes a low-resolution video bigger and sharper. A player just stretches each frame when you go full screen. An upscaler works out what the extra pixels should look like and fills them in, so a 720p clip can become 1440p and a 1080p clip can become 4K.
TapirUpscale lets you upscale video online for free, right in your browser. Add a video, choose 2x or 4x, and download the result as an MP4. It works as an MP4 upscaler, and it also accepts MOV, WebM and MKV files.
Why upscale video in your browser? 🔒
Most online video upscalers upload your file to a server and do the work there. TapirUpscale does the opposite and runs on your own device. That choice has benefits and costs.
What you get
- Your video stays with you. Decoding, upscaling and encoding all happen on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so private footage stays private.
- No sign-up, no watermark, no queue. Open the page and start. There is no server line to wait in.
- Your sound is kept. Audio is copied into the new MP4 as-is whenever the format allows it.
What it costs
- It uses your hardware. Speed depends on your GPU. On an older laptop it can be slow, and a long video can take a long time.
- Your computer works hard. Expect the fans to spin up and the machine to get warm while a video is processing.
- Phones are a poor fit. A weak or older phone may be very slow or fail. A laptop or desktop is much better.
- The tab must stay open. Closing it stops the job.
For long videos or the best possible quality, a desktop app on a strong GPU will do better. TapirUpscale is for short clips and for people who would rather not upload their files.
AI video upscaling in your browser: two engines, picked for you ⚙️
To upscale video with AI inside a browser, the work runs on your graphics card through WebGPU, a browser feature that gives web pages direct access to the GPU. Current versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari support it. Without it, the AI model falls back to a very slow mode.
Sources up to 720p are enlarged with a small neural network (IMDN) that runs on WebGPU. It rebuilds edges and texture instead of just stretching pixels. Larger sources use AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0, a fast spatial upscaler that keeps HD footage quick to process.
You stay in control. Switch between Fast and High quality, turn on Anime mode for line art, and use the Detail slider to decide how much sharpening to apply.
Who is it for? 🎯
Old family videos and phone clips 📼
Footage shot years ago on a phone or camcorder often looks soft on a modern TV. Upscaling gives it cleaner edges and more pixels, so it holds up better on a big screen.
Gamers and screen recorders 🎮
Gameplay captures and screen recordings made at a low resolution look blurry once you play them full screen. Upscale them before you share.
Editors and creators 🎬
Need a low-resolution clip to match the rest of a 1080p or 4K timeline? Upscale it first, then drop it into your project.
Anime and cartoon fans 🍥
Anime mode is made for line art, so outlines stay crisp and flat colours stay clean.
How to upscale video to 4K 📺
4K is 3840 × 2160 pixels. How you get there depends on where you start:
- Upscale 1080p to 4K: choose 2x. 1920 × 1080 becomes 3840 × 2160.
- 960 × 540 video: choose 4x. It also lands on 3840 × 2160.
- 720p video: 2x gives you 1440p, a clean step up on most screens.
A 1080p video at 4x would be 8K, which most browsers cannot encode. If 4x is unavailable for your file, use 2x.
Upscaling vs. enhancing: what to expect ✨
Many people searching for a way to enhance video quality really need more resolution, and that is what upscaling gives you: more pixels, cleaner edges and restored detail.
It does not stabilise a shaky camera or correct colour and exposure. And a heavily compressed source keeps its blockiness, because upscaling cannot recover what the original file never had. Start from the best copy you have. For a full walkthrough, see our guides on how to enhance video quality and how to unblur a video.
Tips for better results 💡
- Render the one-frame preview first. It shows before and after, and estimates how long the whole video will take.
- Use 2x for the best balance of speed and quality. 4x is much slower and may not fit your browser's video encoder.
- Keep the tab open while the video is processing. Closing it stops the job.
- Try a short clip first if your computer is older. Speed depends on your GPU and on the video resolution.
FAQ ❓
Can I upscale video online for free?
Yes. TapirUpscale is free to use online, with no sign-up and no watermark. The site is supported by ads.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding, upscaling and encoding all happen locally in your browser. Only the AI engine files are downloaded to your device.
What output do I get?
An H.264 MP4 at 2x or 4x the original width and height. Audio is copied as-is whenever the MP4 container can hold it.
Why is it slow on my computer?
The AI model is heavy. Speed depends on your GPU and on the video resolution. Try Fast quality, 2x, or a shorter clip. The preview shows an estimate before you commit.
Why is 4x unavailable for my file?
Your browser's video encoder has a maximum frame size. A 1080p video at 4x would be 8K, which most browsers cannot encode. Upscale at 2x instead.
Does it work on a phone?
It can on devices with WebGPU, but video upscaling is demanding. A desktop or laptop is much faster.
Do I need WebGPU to upscale video?
WebGPU is the browser feature the AI engine uses to run on your graphics card. Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari have it. Without it, TapirUpscale falls back to a very slow mode, so a browser with WebGPU is strongly recommended.
Can I upscale 1080p to 4K?
Yes. Choose 2x and a 1080p video becomes 3840 × 2160 (4K). A 960 × 540 video at 4x reaches 4K too. Your browser's video encoder must be able to handle the result.
How is this different from other online video upscalers?
Most of them upload your file to a server. TapirUpscale runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, there is no queue and no account is needed.
Does upscaling improve video quality?
It raises the resolution and sharpens edges. It cannot fix shaky footage, colour problems or the blockiness of a heavily compressed file.
Is this an MP4 upscaler? Which formats work?
Yes. Add an MP4 and you get an upscaled H.264 MP4 back. MOV, WebM and MKV files also work and are saved as MP4.
