About TapirUpscale

Hi, I'm /H.lin/

Hlin, the developer behind TapirUpscaleI build free tools that run in your browser. TapirUpscale is the one for video: it takes a low-resolution clip and gives you back a bigger, sharper MP4, using AI models that now run well enough on an ordinary laptop. I made it because it's a fun thing to build and I like seeing how far it can go.

Why I built it

Because I think this kind of tool is interesting, and I learn a lot by building it. Running an AI model on your own graphics card, inside a browser tab, with no server doing the work, is a fun problem. Video makes it harder: decoding, upscaling and encoding every frame without running out of memory teaches you plenty.

Once it worked, it felt wrong to put it behind a sign-up form and a queue. So there is no account, no watermark and nothing to install, and your video is processed on your own device and never uploaded.

How it works

Sources up to 720p are enlarged with a small neural network (IMDN) that runs on your GPU through WebGPU. Larger sources use AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0, a fast spatial upscaler that keeps HD footage quick to process. The result is encoded as an H.264 MP4, and the original audio is copied across whenever the format allows it.

The AI engine files download the first time you use the site, and your browser keeps them, so later runs start faster. Everything after that happens locally, which also means speed depends on your computer. A short clip is a good way to try it first.

How the site is paid for

TapirUpscale is free and supported by ads. That keeps the tool free for everyone and covers the hosting, without asking you for an account or a card.

What I care about

  • Privacy by design. Your videos stay on your device. That is how the tool is built, not just a promise.
  • Honesty about results. Upscaling adds resolution and cleaner edges. It cannot recover detail a file never had, and I try to say so plainly.
  • Keeping it simple. One page, one job: make your video bigger and sharper.

Say hello

I share updates and what I'm building on X: @hlinhbuilds. If something doesn't work, a video comes out badly or you have an idea, send me a message there, or email me at contact@tapirupscale.com. I read everything.
